Federal Treasurer Peter Costello has used a trip to South Africa to announce a multi-million dollar payment to the World Bank.
The money will allow the bank to forgive debt owed by poor countries.
Speaking at a business lunch in Johannesburg, Mr Costello said that Australia has made a payment of $136.2 million to the World Bank.
"Today we made that payment to the World Bank, which covers 10-years of debt forgiveness," he said.
